Introduction to Fluid Turbulence

Fluid
turbulence is one of the great unsolved problems
of
theoretical physics. This talk begins with a short review of some basic
properties of fluids and fluid flows that highlights the intrinsic calculational
difficulties. Then examplesof various flows are shown including
naturally-occurring turbulent flows spanning more than 23 orders of magnitude in
scale size. Finally, a brief description is given of a methodology based on the
Feynman Path Integral
formulation
of statistical dynamics that appears capable
of
surmounting some of the technical challenges.
